Students will discuss something created out of love to help them understand God’s creation and how He created it.

Students will discuss something created out of love to help them understand God’s creation and how He created it.

Materials Needed:

Internet access

Have you ever created something you were really proud of? What was it? (Answers might include: Science project at school; wrote a song and sang it at church; my brother and I created our own fort in the backyard, etc.)
What things did you do to show everyone your project was special to you? (Answers will vary, but might include: I took pictures of it and posted them on social media and texted them to all of my family and friends; I entered a competition to show others my project could compete with theirs; I invited everyone I know to come see it, etc.)

Whenever we design something that is important to us, we tend to take our time and make sure every detail is just right. We put our heart and soul into it, doing whatever is needed to make it just the way we want. These types of projects are special to us because they’re our own creation.

NBA superstar, LeBron James, created a project called the I Promise School. The school, located in LeBron’s hometown of Akron, Ohio, is an amazing place that helps students in need. Ten years after the program started, the first class of students are graduating high school.

The I Promise School provides free breakfast, lunch, and snacks, a new bike to every student, and free college tuition to the University of Akron for every child who attends the school and graduates from high school.

What special detail stood out to you the most about LeBron’s school? (Answers might include: Free college tuition; free bike; help for the parents, etc.)

The I Promise School was created with love. Not one detail was overlooked. LeBron helped to make sure every need has been taken care of for the students as well as their families. This type of public school is a first of its kind and the students who attend will be provided for in every way imaginable.

Have you ever considered that you are God’s special creation? He created you with immense love! God took the time to craft each and every detail of you. If we put a lot of time and effort into our special projects, how much more effort did the Creator of the world use when He crafted us? Today, we’re going to find out.

Before class, familiarize yourself with the craft activity (a video as well as step by step instructions provided at this link):

If your class is meeting online, invite students to have supplies ready at home. If students don’t have access to all the supplies, they can use a single sheet of tissue paper to cut out their handprints and design with markers or colored pencils.

Earlier we learned God created Adam with love. God provided for his needs; He gave him Eve as a partner/helper, a beautiful garden to live in, and plenty of food to eat. All of this showed God’s love for His creation. Adam was special in God’s eyes.

It’s important for us to also realize how special we are, too. We are God’s creation; He made us on purpose! God created us in His own image. He created us to be like Him. Sometimes we might not feel worthy, unique, or special to anyone, but creation proves that we are. Psalm 145:13b says that the Lord is trustworthy and faithful in all He does. If God personally created each one of us, we can trust that He loves us immensely and put us on this earth on purpose!

If your class is meeting online, invite students to have their supplies ready at home. Pass out supplies to your students; they may want to work as partners in order to help each other trace the outline of their hands as neatly as possible. Have your students cut or tear small pieces of colored tissue paper and stick them to a sheet of clear adhesive plastic. When the page is full, have them cover it with another sheet of the clear adhesive plastic. Fold in half as instructed and trace out the hand, being sure that the edge of the thumb and forefinger extend off of the fold to form a heart when cut out. Instructions here:

When they have cut out their handprint suncatcher, have them write “Created with love” on it with a fine-tipped permanent marker. You might want to play this song while your students work [3:53].
Third Day – Your Love Oh Lord

God created you on purpose. You are here on this earth because you were made by our Creator with great care and love! Encourage your students to tape their suncatcher to a window in their bedroom where they will be reminded that they were created in love. Each time they see it, have them say to themselves: “God created me for a purpose. He loves me. He thinks I’m special.”

Remember: God created You with love. You are special. You are deeply loved, just because you are YOU.
