Students will watch a video about how technology helps us in our lives, as they investigate Who provides help that no one else can.

Materials Needed:

Whiteboard and marker

As you welcome students to your classroom, ask them to help you brainstorm a list of robots that people interact with. Define robot broadly and help them brainstorm as many as possible. Ideas could include Siri™/Alexa™, Amazon Echo™, traffic lights, robotic prosthetics, robots in factories, Roombas, etc. When everyone is settled, read your list together.

We interact with technology in so many ways. It’s easy to think of robots as something we’ll use in a far-off future timeline, but the truth is, we already use robots to help us in lots of ways. Check out this robot that is actually available to the public now.

BUDDY THE EMOTIONAL ROBOT (short trailer)

Buddy™ is far from the only home robot on the market. There are robotic pets, lawn mowers, vacuums—you name it—on the market now, with more and more being designed every day.

Buddy is an open-source robot, meaning anyone can design a new feature for it. If you could add a feature to Buddy, what would it be? (Answers will vary.)

What tasks can you think of that robots could help humans with? (Encourage creative answers and discussion.)

If you had a robot that could help you, what are some of the ways you would use it? (Answers will vary.)

What are some things that robots can’t help humans with? (Answers may include: relationship issues, love, family problems, etc.)

Robots are becoming a bigger and bigger part of our lives. They can help with all sorts of tasks. There are some things, though, that robots can’t help with, and those things are some of most difficult parts of life. What to say in difficult situations, for example. But as Christians, we have the promise of a Helper that is better than any robot or human-created assistant. Let’s learn more.

We learned a lot today about the various things the Holy Spirit does for us as Christians.

What is one of the things He does that you appreciate the most? (Answers will vary.)

As we draw closer to Jesus, it gets easier and easier for us to recognize the prompting of the Holy Spirit in our lives. It becomes more natural to follow His lead. The Holy Spirit guides us when we’re in a tough spot.

For example, when we’re trying to talk about our faith with someone. We can always count on the Holy Spirit’s help. Let’s imagine taking that pressure up a notch into a situation that would probably make any of us sweat.

Imagine for a moment that you are in the spotlight—maybe at an awards show or after you won a national sporting event like the Superbowl.

What would you hope to be in the spotlight for? (Answers will vary. Prompt your students’ imaginations if they need it. Maybe for a game-winning Superbowl touchdown? Maybe as an Oscar winner? Someone who discovered the cure for a deadly disease? The first astronaut to touch foot on Mars?)

As a representative of Jesus, living under the Holy Spirit’s guidance, would you use that moment in the spotlight to tell the world something about God? It would have to be something quick—just one thing while you have the chance and everyone’s eyes are on you. Now the Bible tells us that in that moment, the Spirit will tell us what to say. Luke 12:12 says, “for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.”

Hand out an index card and a pen/pencil to each student. Ask them to imagine that they are in the spotlight being interviewed. Give them a few minutes to individually ask the Holy Spirit what one thing they would say knowing that it must be quick and simple.

After they have listened and written down one thing they would say in that instant, regroup. Ask for volunteers to share their “one thing” with the class.

Even though we might never be able to tell a giant TV audience about Jesus, God gives us opportunities each day to share His truth with the people around us. We can trust that the Holy Spirit will prompt us to say or do the right thing at the right time to share God’s love. Take a moment to pray silently about just one person you can share your “one thing” with this week. Write their name on the other side of your card. Pray that you would be sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s guidance for the right time and the right words to speak with that person.

After your students have had a chance to pray and write, encourage them to keep their index card somewhere that they will see it often to help them remember their “one thing” and who they’ve committed to share it with.

Close in prayer asking that you and your students will be sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s guidance in your lives.
