Materials Needed:

  • Internet access

Play the following video clip for your students [1:36]:

Maybe you’ve seen videos like this on the internet. You’ve probably also seen distracted texters like this in real life.

  • For those of you who have seen distracted texters in real life, have those texters faced any consequences such as walking into things? What were the consequences? (Accept all reasonable responses.)

 It is silly, but it shows how we can be so caught up in capturing or sharing a moment, that we forget to enjoy the moment. When our heads are always buried in a screen, we can miss a lot of what’s going on in the world around us!

  • Are you more like the distracted people in the video or like the person observing and filming them? (Some students will relate to being on their phones all the time while others may not have a phone to use all the time, or don’t care to.)
  • Do you think constantly capturing and conversing about our experiences on our phones helps us to be more present in the moment or less? Why? (Accept all reasonable answers. Students may draw from their own experience or the example of people they see in real life or on their screens. Some will find it odd that when we are at a concert in person, we view it through our screen, for example; others will find this normal and can’t fathom not capturing and sharing this unforgettable experience.)
  • Do you think there is value in “unplugging” from social media and technology for a period of time? Why or why not? (Accept all reasonable answers. Some of your students may share their house rules for screen time or may have had to set limits on themselves. Others may wish their parents, siblings, or friends would put down their phone and focus on them.)

Technology can connect us or distract us. Being present in the moment or with those around us is important. Spending undistracted time alone with God can be even harder—but is even more important!
