Power to Serve

Materials Needed:

  • Internet access
  • How many of you use TikTok? If you use it, who are some of your favorite creators? (Ask a few volunteers to describe the type of content their favorites accounts feature.)

Social media platform TikTok has grown tremendously in the last couple years. While there are certainly negative aspects to social media, there are also many positive uses. TikTok star Trevor Abney has over 2.7 million followers on TikTok. When Trevor heard about a family of a fallen marine, he decided to use his platform for good.

  • What do you think of this video? Do you think Abney’s intentions for having a big platform are pure, or do you think having a lot of followers is all about growing his fame? (Without actually being able to interact with him in person, it can be difficult to assess where his motivations lie, but Abney’s reference to using his platform for good can help us assume he has good intentions.)
  • Have you seen other TikTok stars, influencers, or celebrities using their platforms for good? Do you think their actions were motivated more from a desire to help or from wanting to look good in front of their platforms? Why? (Allow teens to share examples.)

Today, we’ll see that God has called us to serve one another, but it’s important to be aware of the motivations behind why we are serving others and how we go about it. In this week’s lesson, we’ll learn that God gives us the ability to serve, and we will consider ways He wants us to use these abilities to serve others.
