  • Smartphones (if you decide to have students scroll the article themselves)

Imagine I provided a spaghetti lunch for our class—and I gave you all scissors as an eating utensil.

  • What would it be like to have such an unconventional tool to eat your plate of spaghetti? (Allow teens to share their thoughts.)
  • How does the tool you have affect the outcome? (Allow several students to answer; opinions may vary.)
  • Have you ever been in a situation where you were asked to do something but weren’t sure you had the right resources you needed to accomplish the job? Tell us about it. (Be prepared to share your own experience to get the conversation going. Ask students to share what they did to “make do,” or if they had to abandon the project completely.)

Display the following link (or invite teens to use their smartphones to navigate to the article):
42 Clever Ways to Repurpose Old Things in Your House

Spend a few minutes scrolling through (or allowing students to scroll through) the ideas on how to invent new uses for old things.

  • Which idea seemed the most unconventional to you? Why? (Accept all reasonable responses.)
  • Would you try any of these new uses for old things at home? If so, which one? (Accept all reasonable responses.)

At first glance, some of these new uses for old things may seem strange or even ridiculous. But on closer look, a lot of the suggestions turn old or seemingly useless tools into helpful tools to get a job done!

The right tools are necessary in order to be the most successful in completing any task. God equips us with the necessary tools to be overcomers in our battles against the enemy. Today we will learn what those tools are and how best to use them.
