As a way to introduce today’s lesson to your students, invite students to respond to this question.

  • Have you ever been hurt, excluded, or judged by others for something you believe? What was that experience like? (Answers will vary.)

After students have shared their experiences, share the following story with them:

Around the world, Christians are persecuted for their faith. An organization called the World Watch List publishes annual statistics on Christian persecution around the world. Let’s check out some of the most persecuted countries from 2023.

Play the following video for your students [3:55; stop at 2:50]:

  • Does it surprise you to learn that Christians are being persecuted for their faith around the world? (Answers will vary.)
  • Statistics show that one in seven Christian believers cannot live out their faith without persecution worldwide. Have you ever been treated differently for your faith? Have you seen other Christians experience this? (Answers will vary.)
  • Why do you think most American Christians take their freedoms for granted? (We are pretty insulated from the rest of the world, we are so accustomed to practicing our faith openly without fear, we don’t necessarily live out our faith publicly, etc.)

We are going to be learning more about what some of the early Christians experienced from the Book of Acts. The apostle Paul knew what it was like to face persecution, and his example is a good lesson for us even today.
