Victory Call

Have arriving students remember a victory they have achieved in their life and invite willing volunteers to share about this victory with the large group once everyone arrives. Some examples might include: Competing in a spelling bee, presenting a project successfully in front of a large audience, winning a sporting event, performing flawlessly in a concert program, etc.

After students are all in place, call on volunteers to share their stories of victory. Be prepared to share your own story.

When sports teams win a game, they tend to celebrate! This can look like jumping, shouting, or pouring Gatorade over the coach’s head.

The video clip we’re watching today happened in the recent 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, China. This video is a compilation of clips showing different athletes and teams at the moments they realized they won their competitions. Let’s take a look.

Show your students this video [4:40; stop when students start losing interest]:
When they knew: The emotional reactions in winning moments | Winter Olympics 2022 | NBC Sports

While all these athletes are undoubtedly excited about the great news, they show it in different ways.

  • What did you notice about the way the different athletes celebrated? (Accept all reasonable answers. Students may mention some athletes seemed emotional, some were shocked, some were overcome with excitement, etc.)
  • How do you tend to react when you get exciting and unexpected news? (Answers will vary; accept all reasonable responses.)

The Olympic victories were exciting for the individual athletes, teams, and countries who won! Today we’re going to talk about a shared victory that affects everyone everywhere—a far greater victory than an Olympic win. Let’s see how this applies to us today.
